Sight Words are also often called high frequency words. These are words that we encourage students to memorize by sight as many do not follow standard phonetic rules. This way the students can automatically recognize these words without having to use any kind of decoding strategy or phonics rules. These sight words make up a large percentage (up to 76%) of reading material in young children’s books. This means that once students are able to recognize the sight words, they will be able to confidently identify a large part of each sentence in their reading books.
